On 30 March 1955, Marilyn Monroe – who had just wrapped ‘The Seven Year Itch’ – participated in a charity event to the benefit of elderly American artists in New York City’s Madison Square Garden, attended by twenty-five thousand people. As the highlight of the evening, she made her entrance perched on a pink-painted elephant from the Barnum & Bailey circus, and triggered a riot among the photographers gathered there.
